Blurb:

From the moment Quinn Montgomery sat behind her first snare and cymbal set, she was destined for fame and glory. As Hush Note’s infamous female drummer, she sets the rhythm for the band’s chart-toppings hits. When people tap their feet to their music, it’s to her pulse.

Quinn is content to live in a world away from her family and the cage of her youth. Her only regret is leaving Graham Hayes behind without a goodbye. No matter how many sold-out stadiums she plays, no matter how many crowds sing her songs, his voice haunts her when the music stops.

When a family tragedy forces her to return home to Montana, she plans to leave the second she’s paid her respects. But seeing Graham again turns her life upside down. As a boy, he wasn’t able to make her stay. As a man, he might be her future.

If they can mend their rifts and find solace in the refrains.

The Hush Note series keeps getting better with each page I read! I went into this novel expecting a whole different perspective to who Quinn Montgomery really is…. Holy shit, don’t judge a book by its cover…. This girl has legit been put through the emotional wringer.

In My Own Words:

Rifts and Refrains by Devney Perry is the second book in the Hush Notes series and is told from both Quinn and Graham’s point of view.

Quinn lives on the path of a dreamer. She set out to be a rockstar and now is the top drummer in her industry. But through all the success she’s come to the realization that something in her life is missing. It’s been nine years since she last stepped foot in her Montana hometown, and just as long since she last spoke to her family. But after a phone call from her mom about the death of her Nan, Quinn finds herself running towards the place she initially ran from.

Nine years ago Graham watched the love of his life walk away at the airport without a backward glance. Now nine years later, he finds himself standing in the same spot where Quinn left him behind. Times have changed though, meaning the seven year old son who now waits for him at him. Times may have changed but feelings stay the same. All Graham has to do is get through the week with her close by. Then she’ll be gone and he can put his feelings to rest…. Hopefully….

My Thoughts:

It’s Official!!! I just read my first novel written by Devney Perry….. AND I LOVED IT!!!!
I can finally cross this author from my new to me author’s list! At this moment, I feel so accomplished and so thrilled to have had the chance to read Rifts and Refrains early.

Lately, I found myself venturing down the line of single parent novels. It’s a new addiction that I’ve recently come to terms with. What can I say besides I love the angst and the bonds that live within the pages of these novels. The more angst, the better! That’s my motto when it comes to reading.

Graham is a sexy single father living with a broken heart, and you can’t get anymore emotional than that…. Or can you?

Quinn is caught between a rock and a hard place, coming to terms with the fact that the seperation between her and her family could have been fixed years ago, if they would have both pushed their pride to the side, is a hard pill for her to swallow. Throughout this novel we get a glimpse into the growing pains Quinn, her family, and Graham all have to go through. A lot can happen in the span of nine years.

Another thing I loved about Quinn is the fact that she is the oddball in the family. She dreamed of playing music at a young age…. With a family involved heavily in the church, the congregation heavily frowned upon her style of music…. She marched to the beat of her own drum and she didn’t let anyone stop her from reaching for her dreams.

Rifts and Refrains completely took me by surprise.

In all honesty, I wasn’t a fan of Quinn in the first Hush Note novel (Lies and Lullabies) I didn’t like her meddling ways and I didn’t like her attitude towards Kira. However, I had a feeling there was going to be more to Quinn Montgomery. Learning her story, and the reasoning behind why she pushed people away really hit a place in my heart. I honestly connected with this character. I see her faults and I understood her actions. Aside from the whole rockstar superstar drummer vibe, I found her really relatable. So to say I’m a fan of Quinn now, would be a huge understatement. This woman is a rockstar in all meanings of the word. Her drive to be the best and her struggle to forgive and forget was simply bittersweet. It made her feel more human.

I love novels that incorporate not only strong family bonds but also kids and the bonds they have with their families. Even though it broke my heart to pieces, I loved the fact that Graham had a son. This added a whole new vibe and a whole new set of emotions to this novel. What I loved most about this moment is the connection between Colin (Graham’s son) and Quinn. I loved how they easily bonded over the drums. And, in all honesty, I would have loved to see more moments where it was just the two of them. Maybe have an epilogue where Colin and Quinn have an on stage jam moment. I needed and wanted the extra mile.

Do I recommend this novel?

ABSOLUTELY! Quinn and Graham’s story pulled at my heartstrings. Devney Perry wrote a phenomenal romance!
