We were on the front lines in that world, the mafia world.
There was nothing soft or glamorous about it.
Who you were before no longer mattered. Names didn’t exist.
I joined anyway. I had no other choice because they took my sister.
Join. Find her. Try and make it out alive.
Then he won me in a poker game.
I hated him instantly, thinking he was like my other bosses before him.
He wasn’t. He was worse.
He wasn’t just cold. He was dead inside.
It didn’t matter that he was gorgeous.
He was the most lethal thing I’d ever met.
He was also the only person who could keep me alive, if he didn’t end me himself.
A/N This is a 102k mafia/cartel standalone.
This is the most violent book Tijan has ever written.
Trigger warning: references to sexual violence
“Canaries sing to save lives. I sing and people die.”
My Review
Canary is Tijan’s newest standalone romance! If you all are looking for a bite of suspense mixed within your romances, look no further and grab this book today! If you love Mafia romances where danger is always at the front and in the center of the script, this one has recommendations written all over it.
As you all may know, I’ve been a fan of Tijan’s writing style from the moment I picked up the Fallen Crest Series and the love grew the more I read. I love the twists and turns she incorporates in her novels, but not only that, I love how she writes her heroines. I love the sassy yet vulnerable influences she puts in these characters. And the leading lady in Canary is one of the main reasons behind why I keep coming back for more.
This woman, who goes by many names, is a force to be reckoned with. She’s spotted and wanted by all the bosses in the mafia world due to her special gift of recognizing if someones being honest or telling a bald-faced lie. I loved the fact that this woman has many facets to her character. One minute she’s as fierce as they come and then the very next she’s as pure as fresh falling snow. Her character had me on the edge of my seat.
Now let’s talk about Raize, the man who won this treasure known as Canary in a poker game. At first, I didn’t know if I was going to like Raize. I thought he was a bit too demanding out of the gate and my senses were screaming, don’t you dare trust him, girl. Holy hell, a few chapters more and I was hooked on this man and all the danger he exudes. But what really had me hooked was the way he was with the lucky heroine of the story. I mistook his protective instinct for a more demanding and aggravating quality. The more times I spent reading the more I gathered the fact that this man is protective of his Canary. She’s not a prize to him, she’s his treasure and he’ll move heaven and earth to see that no harm comes her way…. And believe me when I say, he does just that.
I loved the characters and I loved this story, but I felt a few key moments in this one felt a bit too rushed for my liking. I can’t say anymore without going into some huge spoilers. And this is why I decided to rate this one with a four star rating.
Overall, I enjoyed the hell out of this one from the sensual moments to the page turning danger, Canary was a great read.

This one was a fun read despite being her darkest yet. I wasn’t sure about Raize either. I still don’t know if I am sure of him! Haha! Great review.
