Even one-night stands deserve a second chance in New York Times bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken’s novel of sporting desire.
What else can a virgin do when she’s ditched at the altar? Seattle heiress Mackenzie Dupont is treating herself to a single-girl honeymoon in Mexico and a desire to relinquish her innocence to a gorgeous one-night stand. Fake names. True pleasure. But when she wakes up alone, Mackenzie realizes just how much anger is left in her broken heart.
Suffering a tragic personal loss, pro soccer player Slade Rodriguez has his reasons for vanishing without a goodbye. Right or wrong, he’s blaming the beautiful and infuriating stranger he never wants to see again. They’re both in for a shock when Mackenzie shows up as his new personal assistant. And they both have a lot to learn about each other. Because they share more than they could possibly know, including a common enemy who’s playing his own games. And he’s not afraid to get dirty.
Now there’s only one way Mackenzie and Slade can win: to trust in each other and to stop hiding from the lies they’ve told, the secrets they’ve kept, the mistakes they’ve made, and the attraction that still burns between them.

Risky Play is the first book in Rachel Van Dyken’s newest Red Card series. This novel is told in dual point of views (Mackenzie and Slade). I don’t really follow soccer as a sport itself, I do however enjoy reading about it though!
Mackenzie and Slade are two lost souls desperate for a connection so they decide to take a chance which was really interesting to witness, especially given the fact that they both are going through immense heartbreak.
Who doesn’t like a sexy one night stand, with fake names and no chance of ever seeing each other again! Oh, wait. That’s a little impossible when you’re an heiress to the top wine distributor in the industry, and when you’re the top soccer player in the world.
But really, what can go wrong?
Besides everything.
My Thoughts:
I knew I would love Risky Play as soon as I read the blurb. I knew this book would immediately draw me in from the start. And still I decided to dive into this one at a little after eleven at night. I knew it was a mistake but still I went for it. You see it was a mistake to read this around bedtime because Rachel Van Dyken is one of those authors that has the ability to write a novel that is so consuming you can’t put it down. And that’s exactly what happened in this situation. I couldn’t put this book down!
I loved the connection between Mackenzie and Slade. Yes, even when Slade was going through his douche canoe moments, I even loved them together. What I loved the most was the struggle that Slade went through when it came to forgiving himself and not laying blame on others for his actions. It made his character a little more humble in my eyes.
I also loved the great strength that slowly built in Mackenzie. She found the strength to not only stand up for herself. I loved watching her grow into the woman she was meant to be and leaving behind the woman that she was molded to be.
Overall, this was a great novel and a great start to a new series! Rachel Van Dyken never lets me down! I’m eager to see what’s coming up next!
