Synopsis:

After months of silence, here she stands on my front porch, waiting to be let in again. But it’s the same play every time, and I know how this ends – I give her all I have and she carries it with her on the way back to him.I should turn her away, but I won’t. Couldn’t do it if I tried.Because no matter how many times she pops back up, pulls me in and drags me under, it will never be enough. I’ll always want more. More of her. More for us.And she’ll always choose him.

Defenseless Hearts is the second book in the Fumbled Futures Series by Meagan Brandy. I needed Parker’s story after finishing Nate and Kalani’s story, which happens to be the understatement of the year! Before I dive deeper let me start by saying, I’ve been Team Nate from the very beginning. There was no sidelining that man. But there was something about Parker’s character that I appreciated and respected throughout Fumbled Hearts. Parker was a man Kalani needed in her life. With a kind hand and a soft voice who Kalani could lean on for advice or anything she needed. I loved the dynamic duo vibes these two gave off in the first book. But by the end of Fumbled Hearts, I was ready for Parker to have his happily ever after.

There were so many facets to Parker’s character. I loved how he was willing to help others above himself, but I wish he would have put himself first a few times. I also loved the fact that he cared so deeply for his self made family. This man was put through the wringer at a very young age. He had a hatefully vile mother and a father that basically was forced to step away. But through all the ups and downs he always found himself turning towards one person. That person being Kenra Monroe.

And then we have Kenra Monroe. At the very beginning of Defenseless Hearts I hated the very idea of Kenra with Parker. As I said above, I wanted Parker to finally have his happily ever after in the easiest of ways. But as I learned with Meagan Brandy’s novels nothing worth having comes easy. Kenra has reason for acting the way she does throughout this novel. If it weren’t for those moments in the past between Kenra and Parker, I wouldn’t have liked these two together. But through this novel, I found a peace that settled within both Kenra and Parker but only when they were near each other. And the more I read, the more my heart broke for Kenra and the choices she was forced into making in order to protect the future of those around her.

I’m not going to lie, this book broke me and then turned right around and cast it’s magic to heal me. But also, this book comes with some pretty hefty trigger warnings such as self harm, emotional abuse, ect. Kenra is in a dark place in her life, she’s drowning in a future she never wanted, and Parker is the only light she sees. Yep, my heart shattered so many times. I initially planned on giving Defenseless Hearts a three star rating, but after seeing Kenra and Parker together and feeling their chemistry and that connection they shared I had no choice but to add another star making this book a four star rating, in my opinion.

Overall, Defenseless Hearts was an enjoyable read. But, this book does come with some pretty big triggers such as self-harm, emotional abuse, manipulation, ect. If you find any of these to be triggering, I highly recommend you go into this novel with your eyes wide open…. Or don’t read it at all. Now, I’ll be diving into the Boys of Avix series!!! Bring on all the feels! I’m ready!
