Synopsis:
I never expected to see her again.
The connection we shared through her brother was severed when he died in combat.
Their parents were adamant that I never reach out to them again.
I forgot about the pact I made, my promise to make her mine if I wasn’t married by thirty.
The only answer I had for her when she showed up with that handwritten note was no.
Only Devyn Malloy isn’t the type to take no for an answer.
Cerberus welcomed her with open arms, but as that became enough for her, I realized it might not be enough for me…

Legacy is the twenty-eighth book in Marie James’ Cerberus MC Series. Yes, you read that right, book number twenty-eight! These books all read as standalone, and from my experience that fact is true. This is the first book I picked up by Marie James, so let’s dive into what this one is all about.
Emmett once had the perfect life. A great family who loved and nurtured his dreams and a best friend who had his back through all tough times. It was also an added bonus, their families got along. But now, Emmett is looking at life a little differently. He’s looking at it through guilt tinted glasses. His dream was to enter the military and fight for his country with his best friend by his side. Never in a Million Years thinking he’d be the only one coming back home…
At a young age, Devyn Malloy lost her older brother overseas. That death had a domino effect on her family. She can’t remember a time when her parents laughed and weren’t so cold. Their demand for her to go to college falls on deaf ears, and fashion school is not a choice. So with an ultimatum on the table, Devyn decides to choose option two. Leave. With a dream of becoming a fashion designer in mind. Devyn goes to the one person she knows will support her, at all costs. After all, he owes her a promise and a promise made is a promise kept.
When Emmett spots Devyn at the Cerberus MC clubhouse, he no longer sees the little girl chasing after him and her brother. He sees a woman who has the power to wreck the life he has created for himself.
My thoughts:
I was worried about diving into this book. I had no clue it was the twenty-eighth book in a series… I requested this one because the synopsis was just too good to pass up on. What I learned about Marie James’ writing style, she doesn’t mess around when it comes to the slow burn!
Let’s start with Devyn. I loved the fact that this woman chose the hardest path to travel. She had a dream, and she wasn’t going to let anyone stand in her way of achieving that dream. I also loved her sassy vibes. Right off the bat, she knew what she wanted and she was going to get everything she wanted and more in regards to seeing Emmett for the first time after all those years passed…. This woman was fire! There’s just one negative thing I can say about this woman’s point of view, I would have loved a few flashback moments where she’s a little girl chasing after her older brother’s best friend. I would have loved to see The Deal play out. You know, the deal that Emmett made that if he’s not married by the age of thirty, he would marry Devyn…. I wanted to feel that first crush feeling and the puppy love aspect. I wanted a little bit more from Devyn’s point of view….
And then we have Emmett. For being a member of an MC, Emmett was tame. I loved his boy next door vibes and his honorable heart. This man lost his best friend in combat, and he tried to do the honorable thing by staying away from his little sister, but sometimes the matters of the heart is more important than a promise he made to himself. I really loved this man’s vibes throughout this novel. I especially loved the war he fought within himself. Same with Emmett, I needed a few flashback moments, maybe to understand his guilt. I wanted a tad bit more.
And then we have the situation with Devyn’s parents. I understand grief and I understand some may lash out at others due to grief, but the whole situation with Devyn and her parents was bull…. This pissed me off so much, it’s not even funny. I was hoping towards the end, there would be some sort of reconciliation… but I didn’t feel like the moment of reconciliation happened. Sure, Devyn had her parents show up before one of the most important events she’ll ever have in her life… but they couldn’t be human enough to stick around… GRRR… what’s the point in even showing up in the first place… And the thing with the dog tags… If I was Devyn, I wouldn’t have given them back! But that’s just the spiteful being within me.
Overall, I loved the romance and I loved Devyn and Emmett’s characters… I just needed more from this story. I needed more substance to understand their emotions and turmoils.
