Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted byย That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week is a new bookish category in which we get to brag about our favorite books that fit with the weekโ€™s category. You can pick your top 5, 10, 15โ€ฆor so on. I tend to keep my list to ten!

Todayโ€™s category: Things That Make Me Instantly Want to Read a Bookย

Letโ€™s get started!

1. Cover Love
The first main factor that draws me into reading a book is the cover love! If a novel has a gorgeous cover, I’ll read it no matter the author, the blurb, or others reviews. I’ll give it a chance.

2. Author
Of course the second main factor, and one of the most important factors, that makes me instantly want to read a book is the author. I have several auto-buy authors on my list and whenever they publish a book, I’ll immediately 1-click and read that book.

3. Hype Surrounding Said Book
The third factor is if a novel has a lot of hype surrounding it, especially from reviewers/bloggers who have similar taste in reads as I do. If they love the book, there is a good chance I’ll love it also.

4. Trope(s)
The fourth factor that helps me choose a book to read is the trope factor. There are many tropes I love and a few I’ll drop everything for, including my current read, to read that book. For instances, my guilty reading pleasure is the Surprise! You’re a Daddy romances! Another trope I’m starting to love is the age-gap trope! So if you have any recommendations for either of those tropes, drop them below in the comments!

5. Michigan Settings
If a romance is set in Michigan, I’ll read it! I love feeling like a novel is taking place in my backyard. Although, I haven’t found many novels set in my state, I’m always on the lookout so if you have any romance recommendations that take place in Michigan, let me know!

6. Romance Sub-Genres
I will drop everything I’m doing in the name of Rockstars, Fighters, and MC Men! If a novel comes to my attention with these subgenres I’ll read the synopsis and chances are I’ll immediately pick that book up and give it a read. I don’t know what it is about these three sub-genres that immediately catch my attention and capture my heart. But I keep coming back for more, so it has to be something.

  1. I was going to put the cover, but I really hate it when I get a book because I loved the cover and then hate the story inside. It’s such a tease, haha. I agree with the Michigan setting, only for me it’s Connecticut, as that’s my home state ๐Ÿ˜†

    1. Good point. There have only been a few cover loves that turned into disappointing reads for me. The one that gets me though, is I often judge a book by its cover, so if I don’t like the cover, I won’t read the book. Now I’m sitting here wondering how many amazing novels I missed out on due to my cover love obsession!? It’s a never ending struggle.

  2. Erin Hahn’s Built to Last and You’d Be Mine are set in Michigan. I think you would love them. I also like to read books set in my state (Washington), but sometimes I get mad if they don’t accurately describe where they are set or give all the main Seattle attractions like they’re checking off a list.

    1. OHH! I’ll have to check these books out! Thank you!

I can see your frustration there. I hate the key point checklist theory when discussing a popular state and attractions. The majority of the books I have read set in Michigan are based in Detroit or the Detroit-Metro Area. Michigan is so much more than city towns. We have so much beauty up north to experience. Melanie Harlow is a great author who is from Michigan and writes novels set in this state. She writes a lot of small town/rural area romances and she’s the author that brought me out of my Michigan reading funk. I’m hoping to find more in the future! It can be very frustrating though.

    1. I live in a rural area in Michigan, basically a farm town, so I understand your issues with books based near you and not living up to the expectations. Michigan novels tend to be based in the large cities such as Detroit. Honestly, Detroit is just a small part of Michigan. There are so many beautiful wonders this state holds. It’s depressing that most authors that write books set in Michigan don’t dive deeper into the state and what we have to offer. I have, however, found a few authors who are from small-ish towns in Michigan and like to write their settings based on what they see. Fictional towns, yeah, but i can look out in my backyard and picture the setting as clear as day.

    1. I bought a Leigh Bardugo hardback book (Six of Crows) for the cover and because the pages were edged in black! To this day, I still have yet to read the book or anything else from this author… (Haha)… I may have a slight problem.

      1. Ooh I do love a black sprayed edge. I have the collectors edition of Six of Crows as well as my regular paperback and it’s so pretty, the edges are red! Leigh Bardugo is great, I hope you do get around to reading Six of Crows one day ๐Ÿ™‚
