JORDAN

He took me in when I had nowhere else to go.

He doesn’t use me, hurt me, or forget about me. He doesn’t treat me like I’m nothing, take me for granted, or make me feel unsafe.

He remembers me, laughs with me, and looks at me. He listens to me, protects me, and sees me. I can feel his eyes on me over the breakfast table, and my heart pumps so hard when I hear him pull in the driveway after work.

I have to stop this. It can’t happen.

My sister once told me there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable.

Only Pike Lawson isn’t the unavailable one.

I am.

PIKE

I took her in, because I thought I was helping.

She’d cook a few meals and clean up a little. It was an easy arrangement.

As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to.

The more I find my path crossing hers, though, the more she’s becoming a part of me.

But we’re not free to give into this. She’s nineteen, and I’m thirty-eight.

And her boyfriend’s father.

Unfortunately, they both just moved into my house.

*BIRTHDAY GIRL is a stand-alone, contemporary romance suitable for ages 18+

Book Review

4.5 Stars

I’m fairly new to Penelope Douglas’s novels, so I went into this novel not sure exactly what to expect. Birthday Girl was a novel that was recommended to me by several bloggers and because of the seriously high reviews and the intriguing blurb I decided to pick it up and give it a chance.

Jordan’s life hasn’t always been smooth sailing, in fact, some may say her childhood downright sucked. Having had her mother abandon her at a young age and being cared for by a neglectful father, Jordan was forced to grow up quickly and at a young age she learned the only person she can depend on is herself. On her 19th birthday Jordan finds herself alone in a movie theater, after her boyfriend refuses to answer her calls, with nothing but a box of donuts and a box of wine.

One night is all it takes for fate to step in and change the course of someone’s life.

I was hooked from the start, honestly after reading the blurb, I thought I would have a few gross out moments given the fact that this involves a woman and her boyfriend’s father. The age difference sounds a little extreme but given Jordan’s take on the world and how she seems older beyond her years due to her history, the age gap made complete sense.

I loved the extremely slow build and the whole getting to know each other factor between Pike and Jordan. The slow build allowed for a foundation to build up a strong relationship. Given the fact that these two have so much to face, it was needed.

I cannot get over how hard I was crushing on Pike. This man is everything! He’s so swoony! I think I’m in love….<3

Penelope Douglas just gained another fan for life with Birthday Girl!
