Synopsis

He’s Paxton Wilder.

Twenty-two-year-old, tattooed, smoking-hot leader of the Renegades.

Five time X Games medalist.

The world is his playground—especially this year—and for the next nine months I’m stuck as his tutor on the Study at Sea program.

He’s too busy staging worldwide stunts for his documentary to get to class.

But if I can’t get him to take academics seriously, I’ll lose my scholarship…if I don’t lose my heart first.

Six unlikely friends on a nine-month cruise with the Study at Sea program will learn that chemistry is more than a subject and the best lessons aren’t taught in the classroom…but in the heart.

My Review

I received an ARC from the publisher via netgalley for an honest review

Wilder by Rebecca Yarros is about pushing life to the limits and stepping outside of your comfort zone. It’s about facing fear head on and not letting your past get in the way of your future. But most importantly it’s about friendship and being there for one another.

Wilder is told from two point of Views.

We have Paxton Wilder who is an adrenaline Junkie and also a X Games gold medalist. He’s known to the world as Wilder. Paxton Wilder is head of the group called the Renegades. They are an adrenaline type group always looking to up their intensity factor on their Stunts. After one of their own is seriously injured they decide to create a movie. The only problem is in order to keep the movie rolling Paxton Wilder has to finish his college education. What better way for an adrenaline junkie to finish his College education than by entering a Study by Sea program.

Now we welcome Leah Baxter. Leah is the smart girl with a tragic past that’s always wearing jeans or leggings. Not to mention the walls surrounding her heart. Leah and her best friend Rachel decide to embark on this Study by Sea program but in order to be able to afford it she decides to tutor. Rachel comes down with mono so Leah has to go it alone for the first semester. Or that’s what she thinks.

I felt like the characters in this story were on point and written flawlessly. They were as real as real can be. There was not a single point where I questioned them and thought to myself “Yeah right, like that would ever happen.” I connected with each and every one, even the secondary characters!

I Loved Rebel and hopefully she gets her own book 🙂

There is a ton of fear facing in Wilder but also there are some heart stopping moments that put you on the edge of your seat! At one point and it involved a cliff I was thinking oh SH*T this is going to be the moment I start to have a love/hate relationship with this author! You’ll have to read to figure out if I in fact do or don’t have a love/hate relationship with Rebecca Yarros 😉 I’m not giving anything away.

Wilder travels all over the world. There are tons of adventures to read through. this novel takes you to Bermuda, Barcelona, Rome, Istanbul, Mykonos, Morocco, Madagascar, and Abu Dhabi. Not to mention all the time cooped up on the cruise ship during the at sea time!

There is also a mystery aspect to this novel! A person is set out to sabotage the stunts that the Renegades are trying to perform. Video footage from the cameras have been hacked into not to mention a run in with the Madagascar police that ends badly due to a missing photography license occurs.

When you learn who the mole or the culprit is you will be shocked!!!

I really enjoyed reading Paxton Wilder’s POV. I loved watching the determination behind him trying to complete a stunt especially the triple front flip! I would love to see that in real life!!!

I feel Leah’s character was the most relatable though. Suffering from her tragedy and building a wall around her heart is something that I feel like everyone can relate to. Granted it may not be that Tragic of an event but we have all lost people we’ve loved. We have all had to fight the pain and enduring ache on occasion. It’s hard not to put up a shield when those moments occur; but that is life. Life goes on even when the living pass away. That’s the one thing that never changes, life goes on.

This is a first time read for me by the author Rebecca Yarros and I’m so glad I took the leap. I loved Wilder! I usually speed read through books but in this novel I found myself slowing down and taking it all in. When I finished it I was contemplating on when I will be able to reread it!

My favorite part was on the beach when Leah show’s Paxton the picture of her parents taken right after her dad proposed to her mom. I loved how Paxton recreated the scene with Leah. Before you get your hopes up sadly there was no ring involved just a very happy tear worthy moment between the two!

This novel is perfect for everyone that is looking for something a little different. I recommend it to everyone that loves adrenaline fueled scenes mixed with romance along with a little mystery.
