Books I Avoided Because of the Hype

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted byย That Artsy Reader Girl.

Todayโ€™s category: Books I Read/Avoided Because of the Hype (and did you make the right choice?)

I’m always feeling a little bit behind when it comes to reading hyped books. By the time I usually get to these novels, the hype is strong, spoilers are out there, and there have been enough teasers to basically tell the tale itself. My mind automatically decides not to read these titles until the hype settles down a bit. Here are the books I want to read, but have been avoiding due to the hype surrounding them.

A Court Of Thorns and Roses – Sarah J. Maas

There was a time when I really wanted to read this series… But then the hype started trending around these books, the spoilers were vastly spreading across social media, and I felt like I could practically tell this tale without even opening the book. So, my initial plan was to read this series once the hype started to evade the premises. And it worked, in this case, I’ve been avoiding all spoilers from new readers and I feel like I’m ready to FINALLY dive into this series.

The Empyrean Series – Rebecca Yarros

The Empyrean

The Empyrean Series by Rebecca Yarros is a series that I’ve decided to avoid, for the time being, due to my local bookseller informing me if I didn’t like cliffhangers, to wait and read this series until it was finished. Now, i’m not sure if this is true or not, but I’m taking her word for it. I really do NOT like cliffhangers, unless all of the books are published in the series. So I have a few more months to go before I can officially pick up this series. To tell you I’m excited and i damn near caved a few times, would be an understatement.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series – J.R. Ward

This series is not an intentional avoid to me. I tend to read paranormal/supernatural novels in the Fall season due to halloween approaching and what not. I started this series a few years ago, but in all honesty, I’m a bit overwhelmed by the amount of books within this series. And then you combine the spin-off series’ that come in connection to this series. It’s all a bit overwhelming. I do plan on reading this series, but in small increments…

Anything written by Colleen Hoover….

It Starts with Us: A Novel (It Ends with Us Book 2) Verity

The hype that surrounds this author with each and every novel she publishes is crazy. And when I say hype, I mean both good and bad. In all honesty, I’m not sure which reviews are honest, and which are bought and paid for. That’s complete honesty from me. I see people loving these novels and freaking out on tiktok over these books. I see celebrities reading and promoting these books and it’s really hard to trust those opinions these days. I do plan to read these two books. but only when my mind is ready to dive into these books….

Rock Chick

I own all of the books in this series, but if I’m being honest, I’m a tad bit intimidated by the hype that still lingers around this series. These books sound great and all, but the hype scares me! And I’m not sure why! Kristen Ashley is a phenomenal author!!

And there you have it, four series and two standalones I have avoided due to the hype that surrounded the book and/or author. One day, I will read all of these novels. But for now, I’m happy just knowing they exist in the world.

What books have you avoided due to the hype that surrounds them?

  1. I donโ€™t avoid reading books because of the hype. But I stopped reading Tiktok sensation because they never worked for me! Booksta is better or bloggers recs ๐Ÿ˜…

    1. I loved the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare! I read these books in the middle of the hype and really enjoyed them! I don’t recall ever reading The Hunger Games, but I watched the movies. The content of this series is a bit crazy.

  2. Same. By the time I get around to overhyped books, there are usually so many spoilers out there that I know exactly what I am/am not getting myself into! Also, I don’t know how many times I’ve told myself not to even start a series until it’s finished and I can binge it. (Spoiler alert: I never listen to myself.) It’s so frustrating to have to wait for sequels to come out.

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

    Susan
