Question of the Day? | What is the saddest book you’ve ever read?

Itโ€™s day twelve of my Question of the Day journey.

Question Of The Day:
What is the saddest book you’ve ever read?

My Answer:

A Child Called It: One Child's Courage to Survive by [Dave Pelzer]

When I was a freshman in high school, I took a sociology class. I don’t remember why, but I remember we had to read a book titled ‘A Child Called It’ by Dave Peltzer. The book is kind of like an autobiography of all the abuse he suffered as a child. My friend’s and I were sitting at the lunch table in the cafeteria catching up on the chapters assigned for the day, and I remember looking up and seeing the tears were not only falling from my eyes, but from theirs too. There was an article in the news yesterday, which brought up a memory of a disturbingly tragic moment in that book. I brought it up to Mr. Man, and I couldn’t even get the words out of my mouth without bawling. I can’t talk about the book without feeling a sense of rage, I highly suggest you not read this book if you experienced any of these triggers: child abuse and child neglect.

The Edge One True Loves: A Novel by [Taylor Jenkins Reid]

Because I am a romance book blogger, I thought why the hell not. I’ll throw in a couple more novels on the sad side of the spectrum. The first duet I want to talk about is The Edge duet (Edge of Never/Edge of Always)ย  by J.A. Redmerski. If you love road trip novels that involve two strangers just trying to find their way in the world, this may be the duet for you. BUT, I do tell you to enter this one with caution. It packs an unexpected punch. I remember full on ugly crying with this one! And the second novel I want to add is One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid! OMG! This one also packs an emotional punch! I didn’t read the blurb before diving into this one, and in all honesty, I had no clue what I was getting myself into. All I knew, the cover was pretty and the book was two dollars at my used book store. I had no clue it was going to be an ugly cry romance, but this one completely consumed my every thought and was the keeper of every tear. Definitely get your hands on both these books if you’re looking for a beautifully tragic story!

  1. If I had to list the saddest book I’ve ever read, it would also be A Child Called It. I read that one in college and I can remember sobbing through it. The only book to come close after is Bright Side by Kim Holden.

      1. It will! I won’t even say how long ago I read it because I don’t want to feel so old, but it has stuck with me all of these years.
