Will he hide behind his walls or will he take the chance . . .
Forgive me if I get over emotional with this review, once in a blue moon I read a novel that affects me in the most tremendous ways. A novel that tugs at every emotion and consumes me. A novel that causes me to bawl like a baby one minute and then has me laughing the next. It’s been a while since I’ve read a novel that sends all my emotions scattering about.
I’ve recently became a huge Fan of A.L. Jackson’s after reading her Bleeding Stars series. I’ve come to learn that you have to expect the unexpected when it comes to her novels. Show Me The Way is a deeply emotional and endearing novel. This is a story of what it is truly like getting over heartbreak and pushing aside the fear that stands in the way of moving on.
Rex Gunner is a single father to an adorable little girl (Frankie Leigh). After his wife up and left with no word as to why, Rex decides to shut his heart down, the only exception being his mama and his daughter. So Rex lives day-to-day doting on his beautiful daughter and running his very successful construction business.
Rynna Dayne ran away from home 12 years ago. She swore to herself she would never return to Gingham Lakes no matter what. But when she receives a call from an attorney in regards to her grandma’s passing she has no choice but the return home and live out her grandma’s final wishes of continuing on with the family business. Pepper’s Pies.
When Rynna moves back into the house she once called home everything falls into place for her and she truly realizes at that moment Gingham Lakes is where she is supposed to be. That is until she sets her sights on her brooding next door neighbor Rex. She instantly feels unwelcome a feeling that has taken her years to overcome.
Rynna and Rex’s relationship starts off rocky. They both are struggling with the fear of opening their hearts back up and letting others in. Rex is fighting the guilt caused by the chemistry that is continuously building between the two and Rynna is trying her damnedest to show Rex it’s okay to let someone in. These two literally broke my heart. I understand being in that situation where heartbreak is like a cut that refuses to heal. Both characters situations are easy to relate to.
As with every great romance novel comes the inevitable twist. This twist….My mouth literally hung open when I reached the peak of that emotional roller coaster. The ANGST…oh holy hell, the angst and turmoil A.L. Jackson just put me through, my heart is still shredded and torn to pieces, even after the happy ending. My mind is replaying those scenes over and over again like a movie on an endless loop. I was completely blown away. The description and emotions the characters portrayed had me feeling like I was standing on the sidelines watching the traumatic event take place.
I have to admit, Frankie Leigh stole the show with her lovableness! I couldn’t get enough of the cuteness her character brought to the novel.
Overall, Show me the way may just be my favorite A.L. Jackson novel. I loved how Rex was a true father figure. I loved how attentive he was to his daughters needs and always put her first. I also really enjoyed Rynna and how she and Frankie Leigh started the novel off with a bonding moment. This novel tugged on my heartstrings. I loved it and highly recommend!
