Welcome to my first ever Music Takeover!
Before we get started let me fill you in on a little bit of background so you can get a feel for why I decided to do a once a week music takeover:
My two greatest passions are Reading and Music. I feel you can’t have one without the other. I love listening to author playlists on Spotify that go along with novels. I’ve had a strong passion for music since I was a little girl. I love to sing and am currently learning to play Guitar. (I’ve officially gained calluses on my finger tips….OUCH) Anyways, i thought it would be fun, once a week to do a post that is all about music. These posts are going to be very Random. So you never know whats going to come out of my mouth or from my keyboard. I hope you all enjoy this little weekly treat!!!
IN THE AIR TONIGHT by PHIL COLLINS….COVERS?
(Yes you heard correctly..There are surprisingly quite a few covers of In The Air Tonight floating around)
I feel one of the most iconic songs in music history is In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins.
There are so many theories out there on what this song portrays.
Some people state that Collins wrote the song after he witnessed someone drowning, others claim it was written when he caught his Ex cheating. The actual story is not as interesting as the theories. Phil Collins wrote the song while he was going through his first divorce. He was battling with his own emotions and personal demons, this song portrays those emotions,(or so that’s what the internet tells me).
Whatever the truth is it cannot be denied how intense the lyrics of this song are. In all honesty I’ve blared this song from my speakers in a locked room a time or two in my life.
My dad and I were discussing this song one day and I told him about a couple of covers i happened across on Spotify and YouTube. He threw his hands up and told me they aren’t worth listening to and nothing is as good as the original. He is in fact true on that but i found three covers that I found close to being almost as good.
This doesn’t usually happen when listening to a favorite song that you basically grew up on. Usually I’m close minded like my dad. The only time I ever had a feeling anywhere remotely close to loving a cover more than the original was when Disturbed came out with their own rendition of Sound(s) of Silence (originally released by Simon and Garfunkel)
The first Cover:
I found this Cover one night while randomly surfing YouTube. The cover is sung by Chris Daughtry (Daughtry) and Brad Arnold (Three Doors Down). Now i could be biased because I have mad love for both of these singers but, I love this rendition!
The Second Cover:
I found on Spotify while i was incidentally searching for covers of In The Air Tonight after i watched the above cover. I really enjoyed Kelly Sweets rendition of the song. Its different with an edgier New Age vibe. (Just a heads up if you’ve watched the trailer for Petals in the Wind on the lifetime channel, you’ll hear this version of the song.)
The Third Cover:
I found, while I was listening to a David Nail album on Spotify. I love country music so i was beyond surprised and very pleased to find this song and a different country type approach that David Nail brings it. He ‘Nailed’ it….haha
I love how each song has the same vibe as the original but with their own little twist on it.
Love em’ or Leave ’em?
Are you a fan of Covers or do you usually just stick to the originals?
Until Next week,
