MY REVIEW:
5 stars!!!!
Before i start this review i want to let the readers know this novel involves Cheating. If Cheating is a trigger for you i would recommend you go into this novel with your eye wide open.
I’m at a loss for words after reading Torrid Affair by Callie Anderson.
I loved every bit of Torrid Affair. It literally tore my heart to pieces than put it back together so many times I’m suffering from emotional whiplash…but I wouldn’t have it any other way. There are so many up’s and down’s highs and lows. The only thing I could compare it to is riding a roller coaster. The lows are extremely low and the highs were out of this world.
Brie and Nate’s story completely devastated me. How can two people that are clearly meant to be together have such a horrific start to a relationship. All the drama could have clearly been avoided if only they were true to themselves and fessed up in the very beginning. But of course that wouldn’t have made this the amazingly angsty novel that will no doubt tear thousands of reader’s hearts out of their chests.
So before I go further into this review I want to state and let it be known I am one hundred percent against cheating in real life. But I do know how to separate the literary world from the real world so therefore I’m not against cheating in novels. In fact, I kind of enjoy reading novels like these. The more angst the better!
Don’t judge an author’s moral character by the characters in their head. They can’t help the messed up stories that need to be told.
Torrid Affair is a story about two people who are meant to be together only to get ripped apart from the start. Brielle is just an ordinary college girl with a family she’d rather forget about. Nathaniel is a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks who is trying to clean up his image. The stars align for the two after Nate steals Brie’s Parking space in the end making her late for her class. After a couple of heated glances Nate asks Brie out on a date. She agrees and in the end has the best date of her life. You know the whole lot of butterflies swarming in your stomach feeling. The same feeling you will get while reading this novel.
The main characters run into a hell of a lot of problems in this novel. The first being Delaney and the second being Julian. Not to mention the facts that Brie and Nate spend almost the entire time frame of this novel sneaking around behind peoples backs. In reality what kind of relationship is that if you have to live off stolen kisses and sneaking around. Not a very healthy one.
After the wonderful date Brie learns a secret about Nate that devastates her and breaks her already cracked heart. She learns that he is dating her best friend and roommate Delaney. At this point of the novel my love for Nate quickly turned to Hate! Seriously throughout Torrid Affair I had a love/hate relationship with Nate’s Character. He was really sweet one minute and then a dick the next. I had hopes for him throughout this novel. Even when my heart was breaking I still held out hope that this dysfunctional relationship would have a happy ending.
I really enjoyed reading Torrid Affair. I loved the angst, the heartwarming moments but also the Heartbreaking moments. But what I loved the most about this novel was the fact that it felt real. It’s scary to admit but situations like this occur every day and the most devastating fact is some of the situations turn violent just like the events that occurred in this story. People live off anger they thrive on revenge in return hurting the ones they love the most. Having innocent bystanders watching as the horrific scenes play out. Never once thinking that the actions you are committing have consequences. Never once asking yourself the question of who’s watching. I just pray all the Caleb’s in the world get the help they need to deal with what they witnessed.
As you can tell I kind of derailed the train for a minute. You see this story hit close to home for me. A couple of different events that took place have been in my mind since I finished this story. A suicide that occurred down the road from my parent’s house. The kid had a life, a dream, until it was all shattered by a phone call. He didn’t think twice before pulling the trigger. All because a girl broke his heart. Also a man a couple roads over decided to come home early. Found his wife with another man. Went crazy with a baseball bat. The kids were outside playing. It’s crazy to realize the world we are living in. What happened to finding the higher ground and being the bigger man. What happened to setting an example for our future children. Nobody cares anymore that actions have consequences. People that go through these situations need to realize that there is always a silver lining. Yeah it may be hard to find it at the moment when your heart is broken but trust me, as someone that has watched her family be torn apart by lies and deceit. when I say…It Is There!
Anyways back to the novel. As you can probably tell some really horrific moments occurred during the end just adding to all the angsty goodness that I love in novels. I literally cried during said scenes. I don’t mean a couple of tears I was a sniveling snotty ugly crying mess.
I recommend this novel to all my angsty book lovers. Callie Anderson, you just made me a fan. Thank you for writing such a wonderful story about true love and the obstacles you sometimes have to face to be happy.
Peace, Love, and Happy Reading,
Alecia @ The Staircase Reader
